Provisional Licence Information
Before you apply for your provisional licence make sure you know the criteria.
You have to be 17 years of age before you can take your theory test, but you can apply for your provisional licence 3 months before your 17th birthday. You cannot start to learn to drive on the public highway before your are 17.
An exception to this exists for those who are in receipt of disability living allowance at the higher rate, in this case you can learn to drive at 16, you cannot take your theory test before your 16th birthday but can apply for your provisional licence 3 months before your 16th birthday.
You must also meet the eyesight criteria, you must be able to read a number plate at 20 metres for vehicles displaying the new-style number plate, or 20.5 metres for vehicles displaying old-style number plates.
You must also be resident in the UK for at least 185 days.
